Welcome to the School of Graduate Studies
Welcome to the University of North Dakota School of Graduate Studies. We are pleased that you are exploring the University of North Dakota as a place to pursue your graduate education.
It has been my privilege to have worked at UND for the past 26 years as a faculty member, graduate director and department chair, Associate Dean and now Interim Dean of the Graduate School. In my different roles I have had the opportunity to work with students, faculty, and administrators all of whom have contributed to making UND the exceptional university it is today. During my years as Associate Dean and Interim Dean of the School of Graduate Studies we have experienced significant growth in number of graduate students and in new graduate degree programs. With an enrollment of over 2800 students, the School of Graduate Studies has increased its enrollment by more than 30% over the past five years. Currently approximately 18% of the overall student body is made up of students registered in the School of Graduate Studies. With the approval of several new Master and doctoral degree programs over the past five years, the School of Graduate Studies offers over 100 degree and certificate programs through all seven of the colleges or schools, including the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, the College of Engineering and Mines, the College of Education and Human Development, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines, the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the College of Business and Public Administration. Within these graduate programs, it is the Mission of the School of Graduate Studies to promote an atmosphere that encourages a diversity of ideas and disciplinary and interdisciplinary learning environments that support the creation of knowledge and cutting edge research, scholarship, and creative endeavors for our graduate students and tomorrow's leaders. Graduate teaching, research, and service assistantships are available, as well as tuition waivers and funding to support student research and travel for professional development. With nationally ranked programs, and a world class faculty, the University of North Dakota graduate programs provide students with an exceptional environment in which to pursue graduate work.
I encourage you to explore our recently redesigned website that provides information and resources important to graduate students and faculty. Information about submitting the initial application, all the way through to graduation is provided. Information on all graduate programs and degree requirements, assistantships, scholarships, and the services and support provided by the Staff of the School of Graduate Studies is included to help facilitate the student's journey through graduate education. In addition, links have been added to assist faculty in finding information to help support their graduate students as they work through the completion of their degrees.
As you review all that the School of Graduate Studies at the University of North Dakota has to offer you as a graduate student, please feel free to call upon me or any of the Staff if there is anything we can do to help you during this process.
Wayne E. Swisher, Ph.D.
